Medication scanning of multi-dose vials

How are you handling scanning of a medication in a multi-dose vial that can not be taken into the patient room? Do you scan outside of the patient room, draw the medication up in syringe and label the syringe with a medication barcode? Any feedback greatly appreciated. Thanks,
